How to use the Character Counter

  1. Type or paste your text into the box above.
  2. Read the character totals below the box. They update as you type.
  3. Choose a limit from the list, or enter your own, to see a progress bar and the characters remaining.
  4. Edit until the bar stays within the limit, then copy your text.

Why character counts matter

Many places set strict limits. Search engines usually show only the first 50 to 60 characters of a page title and about 150 to 160 characters of a meta description. Social networks, text messages and ad platforms each have their own caps. Checking your count first saves rewrites later.

The counter also splits your text into letters, digits, spaces and symbols, counts lines, and shows the size in bytes when saved as UTF-8. The byte count helps when a system limits storage size rather than characters, because accented letters and emoji take more than one byte.

Limits change from time to time, so check the platform’s own guidance if the exact figure matters. You can always use the custom limit option for any number.

Frequently asked questions

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes, in most systems. That is why the tool shows the total both with and without spaces.

Why is the byte count higher than the character count?

Letters outside basic English and most emoji use two to four bytes each in UTF-8, so the byte count can be larger.

Are line breaks counted?

Yes, each line break counts as one character in the total and is also reflected in the line count.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is stored.
